Ahhh! Summer’s end approaches! For my family that means… VACATION! It’s a tradition in our family to spend it at Cannon Beach Conference Center in Oregon on the same week each year for the past fifteen years. Over the summers we’ve cultivated some strong relationships with friends from different parts of Washington, Oregon and British Columbia, who also spend the same week there each year.
Beside friends, we look forward to traditions created over the years. With our ‘summer family’ we always have a beach day. It’s filled with lots of potluck style food to eat, swimming, boogie boarding, catching up on life and a HUGE campfire! My favorite tradition?!? The yearly and sometimes dreaded family picture on the beach in front of Haystack Rock. It has turned into our Christmas card over the years. Even though I sometimes suggest something different, the kids say, “No… it’s tradition!”
Do you have beloved family traditions? Maybe you want to start some. It’s never too late! Summer is a great time to try. Maybe a campout in the backyard each year… complete with gooey s’mores, picnicking with other families, a block party or even just taking your family photo in the same spot each year to show how the kids have grown.
“FAMILY: Like branches on a tree, we all grow in different directions… yet our roots remain as one.” Amazing how family traditions keep that root strong! Hope you enjoy making memories with your family for the rest of your summer.
