This week’s Gold Star Teacher is Mrs. Keven VanBerkum from Bernice Vossbeck Elementary School in Lynden!
Nominated by Amy Moore: Mrs. VanBerkum has been SUCH an encouragement to our 7 year old daughter! She was really struggling academically all throughout the school year last year. During the whole year, Mrs. VanBerkum was able to not only care for and teach all the other students in the class, but really focus on what her struggles were. And although it was really a mystery as to why she was struggling so much, Mrs. VanBerkum was able to get her more assistance through speech therapy and a math small group, as well as building her confidence in a small group with other peers and her school counselor. Mrs. VanBerkum was in communication with myself and all the other teachers throughout the year regarding her progress.
She was really encouraging to my husband and I after an IEP meeting we had regarding her and encouraged us to do what we thought was best for our daughter for the following year, which was actually to hold her back a year. Our daughter really LOVES Mrs. VanBerkum and we made the decision to have her take 1st grade over again as long as she could have Mrs. VanBerkum again for her teacher, which the school did agree to, as well as Mrs. VanBerkum herself. If it weren’t for Mrs. VanBerkum’s hard work and encouragement to myself AND our daughter, she would still be struggling through this year. BUT, because we did ultimately choose to hold her back and keep her in 1st grade again, added with the fact that Mrs. VanBerkum is the BEST teacher that our daughter could ever have and loves, she is doing EXCELLENT in 1st grade this year and is not struggling near as much as she did last year!
THANK YOU SO MUCH for taking the time to really help our daughter along with ALL the other students in your class, Mrs. VanBerkum! YOU ARE TRULY A HUGE BLESSING!
