Cold weather is here and expected to dip down into the teens this week. Are you ready for it? We’ve got some cold weather resources right here!
First off, this is my favorite winter meme of all time. Just for a laugh.
You
- Check to make sure you can find your hats and mittens
- Do your kids still fit in their boots? Can they find both gloves? Have they already lost their winter coat this year?
- Do you need to stock up on anything for your pets?
Your Home
- Check the windows and apply weather stripping and insulation to keep out the drafts
- Insulate water lines and put on hose bib covers
- Disconnect garden hoses and drain them
- If you have a fire place, now might be a good time to make sure you have some fire wood handy
- Make sure all your smoke detectors are working and carbon monoxide as well
- Pick up a bag of sidewalk salt in case it gets icy
Your Vehicle
- Check your tires. Are they ready for winter weather?
- Keep that gas tank full
- Use wintertime formula in your windshield washer fluid so it doesn’t freeze
- Keep an emergency kit in the car, some basics include:
- cell phone charger
- items to stay warm
- food and water
- booster cables
- compass and maps
- flashlights
- extra batteries
- first-aid kit
- plastic bags
Power Outages
- Have some food handy that doesn’t require cooking or refrigeration!
- Keep some water stored in clean containers
- Charge your cell phone regularly
- Make sure your emergency kit is up to date
- Keep grills, camp stoves and generators out of the office. Protect your family from CO. If your CO detector sounds call 911 immediately.
Keep these handy in case there is a power outage!
Cold Weather Shelters
Snow Fun
If we do happen to get any snow, make sure you keep these handy.
Re: “Your Vehicle”, makes me add something that people may not give much thought applicable to your vehicle. I do concur that the list you show is productive but I would like to add that when the thermometer is below zero then synthetic lubricants. ie. engine and transmission, are most appreciated. I say that because petroleum based oils are incapable of this. Our present perspective is to rather staying home instead of proving what I say about synthetics. RH.
