Generally speaking, do you go up to people you don’t like and be like, Hey, let’s get together for dinner? I mean, as a general rule. We don’t. Or you say, Hey, let’s do lunch. Even if you wind up never doing it, it’s a gesture of, I like you, let’s be friends. There’s just something about sitting at a table having a meal.
That’s why it blows me away when you see Jesus sitting down to have meals with people. Like when he walked into town and the town scoundrel is up in a tree making a fool out of himself… Nobody likes him. He’s a little guy. He’s known for stealing everybody’s money and Jesus deliberately goes to him, and in front of everybody else he invites himself over for a meal. That is a gesture of friendship.
