Brant and Sherri chat over a common cover letter blunder: mixing up “loser” with “looser.” Brant’s not exactly sure why anyone would include that word in an actual cover letter and suggests steering clear of it altogether. He advises pulling out “Clippy”, the old Microsoft Office Assistant, as a possible wingman.

Brant:
So there are certain words that could keep you from getting a job according to this list. And the first one jumped out at me. The word is irregardless. Don’t use that word. It’s not a word. Irregardless. Regardless. This pains me deeply because I’m a traditionalist by nature when it comes to language, irregardless is a word.
Sherri:
Okay.
Brant:
It just means regardless. But yeah, it’s in the dictionary. This is how words happen. I mean, there is no fixed point of saying this is exactly the right language. If there were, I would argue for it, but there’s not. Okay. So language is in transition all the time. It’s based on our own usage. That’s how language is developed and change and it’s in the dictionary.
Sherri:
Got it.
Brant:
And they also don’t use the word, I don’t know why you would do this, I don’t want you to do this in a cover letter resume that said don’t use the word loser. Don’t spell it. L-O-O-S-E-R. Like looser.
Sherri:
Oh.
Brant:
Because people do that all the time too. But again,
Sherri:
Seriously?
Brant:
I’m not sure what,
Sherri:
I’d like this job and I’m no looser. Don’t do that.
Brant:
Yes. I’ll tell you who’s not a looser, this guy right here. That’s why you should,
Sherri:
…should hire me.
Brant:
I think if you’re even trying to spell loser,
Sherri:
Get some help.
Brant:
Yeah. I used to have somebody help you with your cover letter. Like clippy. Remember the paper clip that would pop up? It looks like you’re writing a cover letter, but you just yourself, they got the word loser. Looks like you just called yourself a loser.
Sherri:
Would you like me to change that?
Brant:
The correct way to spell loser is L-O-S-E-R.
