We all need extra peace right now, don’t we? Peace is the opposite of fear, allowing us to develop perspective, build hope, stay strong and remain confident in God. It can feel elusive at times in a world full of anxiety and uncertainty.
On this second week of Advent, we reflect on this concept of peace. Where can we find true peace?
In the Old Testament, one of the names for God is Jehovah Shalom. It means “The Lord is Peace.”
I also love this verse in John 14:27 where Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
Peace is not given by the world. Peace is given by Jesus.
This is powerful to me because it reminds me that things might not be perfect here on this Earth, but God can give us peace in the midst of it. When I remember that the world is not meant to give me peace, it changes my focus to Jesus. When I focus on Jesus, staying in the Bible, making time to build that relationship, my peace grows.
Christmas is a beautiful time. Jesus came to bring the world Peace. Isaiah 9:6 says, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Jesus is the Prince of Peace. Jehovah Shalom.
I hope you’ll take the time to get to know him this Christmas.
