The Bible only mentions one time what happens on this Holy Saturday in Matthew 27:62-66. The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again. So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.” “Take a guard,” Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard.
They wanted to prevent it. I think this is sort of amusing because if Jesus could rise from the dead, how do they think having a guard would stop it from happening? But, what’s the most interesting is that they really didn’t want it to happen. Don’t they know the joy in the fact Jesus rose?
I sometimes wonder if we are all a little afraid of the fact that Jesus rose again because of what is really means. The resurrection makes everything matter. The way we live our lives, the people we are, where we are placing our hope! Where are you placing your hope? In the risen, Lord? If not, now is the time!
Jesus, you are everything. We put our hope in you!
