For All Eyes Only

When your children begin using the computer, DVD player, and other electronic devices on their own in your home, you'll naturally want to keep an eye on them.

The simplest solution is to have "all the media" in a public part of the house like the kitchen area or the family room.  That way, you won't need to go out of your way to see what your children are watching or doing, and it won't look like you are snooping around either.

Sending the noisy kids to the basement or their bedroom might seem like a good idea, but it's easy to completely lose track of what the children are doing when they are out of sight.  And one quick thing, those parental control settings ~ once your children become more tech savvy, they are not as effective as we wish.

To Bev who's 14yr old can soon buy her own notebook. If the rule of the house is "no computers in bedrooms" or "only computers in public area" then that could solve the problem of her wanting to take her notebook into her room. Bottom line is that she may be able to afford a notebook, but you are still the parent and therefore the boss. It's ultimately YOUR decision whether she can use her computer in her room.

Talk to your Children.. explain to them the reason you want to be involved in what they view on the internet is because of the twisted view that can come from how things are experienced on the net. they can get into stuff that has no parental controls what so ever and even net nanny good as it is can't keep up to it. I work in It and websites "info" is rampant in our public schools.

Buy Net Nanny and download it. It is not very expensive, and gives you peace of mind when you are not around.

Great advice, but what about the 14 year old who wants to buy her own netbook and almost has all the money saved. She wants to be able to do her homework in her room. No one gives all the answers for being a parent. Lots of prayer needed.

I agree with this article. It's just safer for it to be in a public place that way everyone is accountable and you're not tempted to go on sights that you shouldn't.
